Cleveland Firefighter Charged With Voluntary Manslaughter

On April 14, at 8:16 p.m., 25-year-old Kevin McCarthy contacted the Willoughby police department to report that his roommate, 25-year-old Christian Kilburg, had died from an unintentional shooting.

It was reported in a press release that the incident took place at an apartment complex in Willoughby located on Grove Street.

McCarthy acknowledged accidentally discharging his revolver, shooting Kilburg in the head, and ultimately causing his death during a call he made to 911. McCarthy is said to have confessed to the police that he had been engaged in a “loud chat” in the parking lot around thirty minutes before the shooting, as shown by the documents filed in the court. According to the records, a neighbour said that McCarthy had an “aggressive manner” throughout the altercation, and she assumed that this behaviour was on McCarthy’s part.

McCarthy revealed to the police that he and Kilburg were sitting on the sofa of the flat and playfully pulling guns on each other while they were doing so. This admission came during the first inquiry and the call to 911. According to the records filed in this case, McCarthy said that Kilburg handed him a firearm during the preliminary inquiry.

On April 18, McCarthy was taken into custody and charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter. He was freed after posting a bail of $50,000. He was sent to house arrest, and the police followed his movements using a GPS device. McCarthy, who joined the fire department in 2021, has been placed on paid leave pending the outcome of the legal proceedings. The investigation into McCarthy’s conduct began in 2021. The preliminary hearings for Kevin’s trial are scheduled to get under way on April 21 in the Willoughby Municipal Court.
