Know the Benefits of Heat Tape

Heat tape is a collective term for various cables and cords that can be attached to roofs and gutters to prevent ice buildup or wrap exposed pipes to prevent them from bursting in the winter. The type used for roofs tends to have minimal flexibility, while the type used for lines is thin and flexible. All kinds of Heat tape are essentially resistant heaters-carrying conductive wires that heat up when electricity flows. In most cases, it comes with an in-line thermostat that monitors the temperature and turns the power on and off to prevent overheating.

How does it work

The idea behind heat tape is the same as the idea behind standard resistor heaters and electric stoves. When electricity flows through a conductor, the conductor’s resistance, known as its resistivity, produces heat. This is why the surface of the resistive heater element and electric stove glows when there is power. Heat tape typically produces temperatures in the range of 450 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit, but some products can have temperatures as high as 1,400 degrees.

Once the tape is attached, the thermostat monitors the pipe’s temperature and turns on the heat if necessary.
